Love Your Mother... Earth

Preserving our lovely planet may seem like a hefty task, one that sounds good, but is impractical in fitting with your busy, on-the-go lifestyle. We’ve all asked ourselves questions like, “If I were to help would it even make a difference?” The answer is yes.

Since 1968 South Moon Under has recognized the Earth as our greatest gift and resource. Knowing that we only have one chance to make a lasting impression, it is with great pride that we strive to leave the lightest footprint possible on this fragile planet. Using the mantra “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” we have structured our company in a way that allows us to feel at ease with the knowledge that we are doing all we can to preserve this planet. Join us in the fight to respect Mother Nature by taking simple steps to ensure that our planet remains beautiful for generations to come.

reduce

What does it mean to reduce?

The all-important first step towards being ecologically sound, to reduce means to simplify, to pare down. It starts with the awareness of what is really important to you, both as a consumer and as a person. Reducing your impact on the earth will make your aware of when you’re being wasteful so you can stop.

How does South Moon Under reduce their impact?

By using simple solutions with a low environmental impact, South Moon Under has been able to reduce their energy expenditure greatly. Skylights and large windows allow natural light to cascade into each room, thus eliminating the need for harsh overhead florescent lighting - this cuts back on energy use and costs. Additionally, each window is outfitted with insulated glass, helping to keep the room cooler in the warm months and warmer in the cold months. Larger steps have been taken as well, such as the use of Geo-Thermal Heat Pumps, Passive Lighting, ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilation), and Foster and Smith’s biodegradable packing peanuts– find out more about these options when you click on the links.

Simple steps to help you reduce your impact:

1. Reduce your junk mail – you know you want to anyway!

2. Just say no to plastic bags and even paper when you can, by carrying your own cloth grocery bags.

3. Buy in bulk and especially avoid single-use items (i.e.: disposable razors, snack packs) – wasteful, wasteful!

4. Instead of paper napkins and towels, buy cloth napkins and hand towels.

5. Buy your own re-usable travel mug for your morning coffee.

reuse

What does it mean to reuse?

We all know what it means to reuse but sometimes forget how important it is – we get caught up wanting the “newest”, “best”, and “most improved” items on the market that we forget to be happy with what we already have. When you squeeze the longest life possible out of each and everything your own and then pass it on for the next person to enjoy, you’re doing the right thing.

How does South Moon Under Reuse?

South Moon Under has never seen an electronic device past its prime. We improve and reuse computers, phones, printers, fax, and copy machines – focusing more on repair than an “out with the old, in with the new” attitude, and have become increasingly good at the “toner shake.” We donate our old carpets, desks, chairs, and interior décor, never leaving them sad, lonely and unused at the dump. Simply put, we see value in everything and will find a way to make it last.

Tips to Help You Reuse:

1. Have a yard sale – one man’s trash is another man’s treasure!

2. Spring for the longer-lasting personal items – such as razors, Tupperware containers, cutlery, pens, and diapers (hello cloth!)

3. DONATE! DONATE! DONATE!

4. Go to the library – there is a certain charm to reading a used book!

5. Purchase rechargeable batteries, and a charger for them.

recycle

What is Recycling?

Simply put, recycling is the act of reviving a product at the end of its life by using it to create something new. Doing so limits the amount of waste taking up space in landfills, and making new products out of old ones helps to reduce the expenditure of energy used in production.

How Does South Moon Under Recycle?

From the exterior of our buildings, which are made with recycled metals, engineered lumber products, and wood chips, to the inside, where we have covered the floors with carpet made of recycled soda bottles, South Moon Under is doing all we can to get the most out of the Earth’s materials. Aside from our recycled building materials, we use paper shopping bags for all of your fabulous purchases, and send a large portion of our plastic, aluminum, and paper products to be recycled. We strive to throw NOTHING away, even restoring, selling or donating our old electronics. These steps require a conscious team effort and we reap the benefits in good karma!

Simple Recycling Tips for You:

1. Create a recycle bin for all of your paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum. If your trash company doesn’t pick up recyclable materials visit http://earth911.com/ to find a vendor near you.

2. Try to buy products/materials made from recycled materials. Purchase paper products that were recycled using a minimum of 50% post-consumer waste.

3. Recycle all ink cartridges, and electronics.

4. Donate old tires and sneakers, the rubber can be reused!

5. Leave grass clippings in the lawn as fertilizer – non-chemical so no dangerous runoff!
